On this month’s episode of Could Be Better, we indulge in some speech therapy practice as J. heads towards recovery from a brain hemorrhage. Can you say “editor’s letter” without blending the sounds together? We warm up with a ginger-liqueur cider but say “tag for hate” on another outdoor entertaining suggestion. We’re in for the chocolate spice cake skewers, though. There’s a lot of food in the February issue but we do have paint can lids in mint green. A less polarizing pastel? We decide. It’s December once again and we’re in the holiday spirit…and into the holiday spirits with Rob’s family recipe for egg nog. We have a few glasses and dish up our opinions on the latest issue of BH&G. There’s a lot of Christmas and not many of our usual features, like I Did It or paint can lids. Instead we get lots of snow-white rooms warmed by holiday colors, even some non-traditional hues which is nice. Tag for love! Tag for hate on the oversized 5th grade play decorations. It’s LGBTQ Pride Month and Rob and J. search desperately for some signs of gay life in this month’s magazine. Though there’s little to be found on the pages, there’s plenty of love at the bottom of their cocktail glasses (thanks to the strawberry basil smash cocktails, lifted from the recipe section). J. explains why this episode was delayed and shares a very painful housing-related memory. Rob gets tongue-tied over a supergay font but otherwise feels kinda “meh,” especially about all the #whiteonwhite neo-bohemian rooms. However, everything turns out all right in the end thanks to a Tea Dance #lewk for the ages.

Shocker: She’s Got A Preference For Pink!
Kids these days… In our April 2019 episode, we become art critics, in that it’s the Art of Color issue and we’re highly critical. How many Tags For Hate can one episode handle? Apparently pink is here to stay (baloney is so on trend right now), beige is back (thank you Gen X), anything can be a neutral, and the most exciting thing about spring is cleaning your toilet. Oh, and the Could Be Better Department of Outdoor Living really needs you to turn in the paperwork attesting that you’ve decorated your deck or patio with an outdoor rug. We also share a few secrets: the recurring nightmare Rob had as a child, J’s middle name, and which featured room is really a sex den. Our takeaway lesson? We’re having a slight delay: Rob had the flu for a week, and his household’s copies of the April issue of BHG took their sweet-ass time getting through the USPS. apparently, Never fear, a new episode is coming to your #podcast feed during the week of April 2nd.
We haven’t been entirely inactive, though: we’ve been discussing some new promo ideas, and there will be more places you can come visit us in person this spring, including the Hudson Valley Creator Fest in Poughkeepsie on May 5th. Watch for more news!

This month we make sure you’re a real trendoid by dissecting our most (and least) favorite so-called trends from BHG’s Trend issue. We’re dubious about ’70’s glam (curate it, please), all-in on mural wallpapers, and totally over a certain color–this time, even the #houseplants get in on the action. Rob is only here for the zoodles, while J. does something unconventional and has to get something off his chest. And which of these trends did we totally call in our January live episode? Remember, we’re not shoving trends down your throat–we’re only gently strongly suggesting them. Signature cocktail: “Matchamacallit” inspired by the matcha-mint “shamrock” shake. On Friday, January 18, 2019 we held our first-ever live event, featuring a taping of our January episode, free food inspired by the January issue of the magazine, delicious custom-made cocktails, audience participation signs, and nearly a full house of friends and listeners! We’re so grateful for all your support over the past year. We always have fun while we tape but this time we got to share it with you!
Chef Tim chose the Spicy Sloppy Joe recipe from the mag, and turned them into sliders which were UNREAL–definitely a keeper recipe!
He also set out savory, cheesy selections on big black cock cheese papers, since this issue went back to those fucking #partyboards AGAIN.
We also asked our friend Amy Dittmar to create custom cupcakes for us. Though there were no cupcake recipes in this issue, the paint can lid page (featuring desert hues–a la succulents) inspired her creation of stunningly real-looking succulent mini-cakes.
Since The Crafted Kup has a beer and wine license but not a full booze permit, we had to get crafty with our signature cocktail. Knowing that most people like bubbles for a special event, J. suggested a spiced pear prosecco cocktail. Rob whipped up a huge batch of simple syrup warmed with winter spices (cloves, black pepper, cinnamon), and the ‘Kup crew garnished each glass with a thyme sprig.
We wanted lots of audience participation, so Rob also created hand-held signs featuring some of our most-uttered phrases. The f-bomb icon got a lot of play during our taping!
Since some of our guests didn’t subscribe to the mag for the entire year, we brought along our back issues, tags intact. We laid them out for guests to peruse and read our notes. A bunch of people went back to the March issue for another look at Hot Toilet Guy and Kyle the gardener!
We also gave away copies of Better Homes & Gardens’ January and February issues, and one lucky guest will receive a year’s subscription! Amazingly our winner Joe didn’t have a subscription already.
